With all the diet gimmicks out there, how can you know that youre doing the right thing to lose weight healthfully and keep it off? Try these evidence-based tips to help you get started.

1. DRINK MORE WATER

Getting your recommended daily water intake prevents dehydration, which can sometimes make you feel hungry when youre not. Drinking water before meals also helps you fill up faster so that you take in fewer calories. However, avoid gulping water while eating, since this can hamper your digestive enzymes and cause uncomfortable bloating.

2. CHOOSE NUTRIENT-RICH FOODS

Reach for foods with the most nutrients per calorie at every meal. That means eating more fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains and nuts. When your body gets enough vitamins and minerals, your cells are nourished and you no longer receive signals telling you to eat more when youve already had enough.

PAY ATTENTION TO PORTIONS

Packaged foods and restaurant meals can deliver hefty doses of calories. When open a box or bag, read the label to find out how much a single serving really is. Measure out exactly that much and put the rest away.

At restaurants, ask for a takeout container at the start of your meal and put away two-thirds to three-quarters of the food before eating. Using smaller plates when eating at parties can help you avoid overindulging. 3. MAKE EXERCISE A HABIT

Getting 30 to 60 minutes of exercise per day burns calories, helps maintain a healthy metabolism, improves strength and boosts endurance. Engage in a mixture of weight training and cardiovascular exercise to increase lean muscle mass and burn fat. The combination aids in weight loss and gives you a healthier overall body composition.
